It’s Mercer Mission Time with Prototype (PC)

Manhattan Island remains our favourite place to introduce disaster after disaster, so it makes sense that Prototype is based in the same location. Playing as the amnesiac character Alex Mercer, you work through an interesting plot, superpowers, varying missions and jaunts to get your memory back. Nothing can quite stop Mercer; he falls, jumps, glides and scales buildings without breaking into a sweat. His repertoire of moves starts from the simple to the difficult, yet awesome.

The combat you face in Prototype is highly enjoyable. You can morph your hands into weapons, hijack tanks and helicopters and disguise yourself as the humans you absorb to regain health. Mercer gains power as the game progresses but then again, so do his enemies. You constantly need to learn new moves because your favourite one may just prove to be ineffective in the higher levels.

The difficulty level increases at a good pace, so the game isn’t repetitive. One of the more interesting parts of the game is consuming 130 marked pedestrians throughout the city to gain their knowledge of what is happening to Manhattan. This adds a darker layer to the game that ups the pleasure. More abilities can be learnt by consuming specialist soldiers in the military camps. The camera and the scenery are not the best but they work well during combat.

With 10 hours of core game play and many smaller games outside of the mission, it is definitely a game you would want to play again and again.
